Early life
Changmin was born and raised in seoul, South Korea. He is the first-born son of teachers, and has two younger sisters, Shim Soo-yeon and Shim Ji-yeon. Changmin and his family are Buddhists. When he was in middle school, Changmin was spotted by a talent scout while playing badminton during gym class. The scout recommended him to audition for S.M. Entertainment, but Changmin had no interest in becoming a singer. His mother, wanting for a chance to meet BoA, urged Changmin to attend the casting auditions anyway. Three days after auditioning, S.M. called in Changmin for a second audition, which he passed successfully. At the time, Changmin had auditioned without his father's knowledge. After winning the Best Singer and Best Artist award at the S.M.-sponsored contest 6th Annual Youth Competition, Changmin signed with the company.
